In what comes as expected, WhatsApp has withdrawn support for some older Nokia models starting 2019. The world’s most popular messenger service will no longer be functional on a host of phones running Nokia’s old S40 operating system. The company is now advising users of these phones to upgrade to an Android or iOS device in order to continue using the service.
The developers reached out to the consumers, stating that the company had to withdraw support for these handsets as they couldn’t implement new features for an older platform. The Facebook-owned messenger keeps on adding new features every now and then, and the older platforms don’t provide the developers to come with new features due to the hardware as well as software restrictions.
There are several Nokia phones that have been affected by the new ban.
–From the Asha series: Nokia Asha 201, Nokia Asha 205 Chat Edition, Nokia Asha 210, Nokia Asha 230 Single SIM, Nokia Asha 230 Dual SIM, Nokia Asha 300, Nokia Asha 302, Nokia Asha 303, Nokia Asha 305, Nokia Asha 306, Nokia Asha 308, Nokia Asha 309, Nokia Asha 310, Nokia Asha 311, Nokia Asha 500, Nokia Asha 501, Nokia Asha 502 and Nokia Asha 503.
–Other older models: Nokia 206, Nokia 208, Nokia 301, Nokia 515, Nokia C3-00, Nokia C3-01, Nokia X2-00, Nokia X2-01, Nokia X3-02 and Nokia X3-02.5.
This isn’t the first time that WhatsApp has withdrawn support for some handsets. Previously, the company withdrew support for Nokia Symbian S60, BlackBerry OS, BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone 8.0. WhatsApp also states that more devices from yesteryears will not be able to support the popular messenger service. It is said that by February 2020, the ban will be implemented on certain smartphones as well.
–Android smartphones running on Android 2.3.7 and older will not be able to support WhatsApp. Therefore, users would need to upgrade to a smartphone that runs at least Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
–For iOS devices, users will need to make sure their iPhones are running on anything newer than iOS 7.
For WhatsApp users on Nokia S40 phones, chat backups can’t be carried over to an Android or iOS device due to platform limitations. However, on an Android or iOS device, users will need to log in with their phone number in order to keep using the same WhatsApp ID. WhatsApp is available for Android, iOS and Windows 10 Mobile.
